As a school owner I am sure you will be interested in knowing what parents look out for in schools. What guides their choice? As a mum of two who has studied both in Nigeria and in the United Kingdom and as an educational consultant who has worked with schools and parents I thought I might share with you some of common threads that I have observed.
The top 2 on the list was teacher quality and class size.
Parents that I have interacted with wanted the assurance that teachers who had the responsibility for their children had the skill and knowledge to bring the best out of their children which they hoped will translate to better grades. Parents in the UK judged this through the school’s Ofsted Report (An inspection report that grades schools with emphasis on the quality of teaching and learning).
More affluent parents in Nigeria were keen on a school that was working at an international standard because for some their goal was to have their children study outside Nigeria after secondary school. In a research complied by the British council Nigeria will soon overtake India to become the UK’s second biggest source of international postgraduate students,
Class size was also topping the list parents were just not convinced that with a big class size their children will be getting value in the school because they felt learning will no longer be personalised. For them and for me my child deserves their teacher’s attention which is more practical with a smaller class size.
